Some Ways That Yoga For Diabetes Is Effective In Controlling Blood Sugar

By Penny Livingston

One important factor that causes blood sugars to be so hard to manage is stress. That is one reason why yoga for diabetes is effective. It encourages relaxation which relieves stress and ultimately improves the blood sugar level for diabetics.

The failure of the pancreas to work efficiently, or at all in some cases, is what causes diabetes to develop. The action of the abdominal muscles while practicing yoga postures helps to stimulate the pancreas to work more efficiently.

Different postures act in different ways to help the diabetic enjoy better health. All are beneficial, however. One way they help is through the deep breathing which helps the body take in more oxygen. Anytime there is more oxygen present, organs work more efficiently.

A study was done with sets of Asana poses performed by forty volunteers. At the end of the study, blood tests showed that the pancreas had become more responsive to glucose signals. This improves blood sugar levels.

The were many different highly recognized poses included. These familiar poses were rotated in pairs every five days during the study. All poses were randomly performed over that five days.

These are not the only poses shown to improve blood sugar control. Others that have been show to help are the sun salutation, Yoga Nidra, and Pranayama, among others. Meditation practiced during them is believed to enhance their effect.

Weight loss is another bonus of these exercises. This is a big factor in blood sugar control. Cortisol levels are also decreased, as studies show. This is another big factor in controlling blood sugar.

It is obvious from the studies done, both formal and informal, that yoga for diabetes is effective. Given the ease in performing the poses, and the lack of any costs to get started, it is an ideal aid for helping with blood sugar control.
